California Educator Elected to NEA Executive Committee

Sheridan to advocate for great public schools at the national level

George Sheridan, a k-12 school teacher in Black Oak Mine Unified School District in Garden Valley, Calif., was elected to the National Education Association Executive Committee, the nine-member governing body that oversees the nearly 3 million-member Association. His three-year term begins September 1, 2014.

“I’m honored to join NEA’s Executive Committee and look forward to sharing my passion for great public schools and my voice in advocating for the professionals who work for them,” said Sheridan. “The future of every student and our nation is dependent on the work of the members of the NEA.

A teacher for 36 years, Sheridan has taught every grade from 1st – 12th during his career. He has also taught graduate courses at California State Sacramento and University of California Davis.

A full-time classroom teacher, leader in association led education reform and champion of human rights and social justice, Sheridan’s goals for the next three years include working to expand collective bargaining, advocating for all members and students, and enhancing community partnerships.

”Genuine education reform should not be done to educators or for educators, but rather with educators and by educators,” Sheridan has said.

Sheridan currently serves on the NEA Board of Directors. He is a member of the California Teachers Association (CTA) Teacher Evaluation Workgroup, which developed a framework to help educators take the lead in the profession and in teacher evaluation discussions nationally. He has also served on the assessment and student testing committee for 15 years, and has served on the CTA budget committee.

“We welcome George’s participation on a national level in working to ensure that our students’ basic right to a great public school becomes a reality,” said NEA President Dennis Van Roekel. “He understands how important it is that educators have the proper training, tools, resources and support they need to get the job done and ensure student success.”

Sheridan received his bachelor’s degree from Loyola University in Los Angeles and a MS in Education from the University of Southern California.

The NEA Executive Committee consists of nine members – three executive officers and six members elected at-large by the Representative Assembly. The committee is responsible for general policy and interests of NEA and acts for the NEA Board of Directors in between its four regularly scheduled meetings each year.
