Novel Bookmarks

Found In: reading, reading activities, reading comprehension, summarizing

My students have difficulty comprehending and sequencing events when reading novels. I have them use an index card for each chapter they read as a bookmark. On the card, they jot down one or two sentences about the chapter, any difficult words, and the characters they meet. This takes only a few minutes because it is done when the chapter is fresh in their minds. We do this for every chapter and keep our bookmarks together with elastic.

At the end of the book, we read the cards as a review. This is a great way to keep track of the sequence of events when time to write up a book summary.
