Power Writing

I ask students to choose one of two words from an overhead. I ask that they quickly jot down any words that they can associate with the given word and time them for one minute. At the end of a minute, I ask them to count up the number of words they have and write the number in the margin. We repeat this procedure three or four times. Challenged to think and write quickly, students write more words each time. This activity gives students ideas they can elaborate on later as we look for pieces to publish.
