Teaching Fractions

Found in: math

This is a tip for teaching fractions and dividing things into equal parts. I purchased several commercially prepared kits of fractional parts that are in the shapes of circles, squares and rectangles. Then, I got the idea of using colored rubber bands to divide an empty egg carton into equal parts. With the carton closed, simply put the colored rubber bands around the entire carton to divide it into halves, thirds and fourths. The equal parts are clear to see when looking at the bottom part of the carton where it is sectioned. Students can create the experience themselves if given the supplies at a math center.
